EURO mascot road show: Gdansk

The UEFA EURO 2012 mascots had another busy day on Monday when they visited Gdansk on the penultimate stop of their tour of the eight tournament host cities.

Fresh from concluding the Ukrainian leg in Kyiv on Saturday, the pair arrived in the most northerly UEFA EURO 2012 venue, on the Baltic coast. They started the day at the Gdansk Lech Wałęsa Airport before visiting shipbuilding schools where they received an enthusiastic reception from youngsters eager to be photographed with them.

The mascots, who are yet to be named, were taken to the City Stadium, home of Ekstraklasa side KS Lechia Gdańsk, and then on to the historic heart of the Polish port, around Długi Targ (Long Market). Here they were joined by Gdansk mayor Paweł Adamowicz and took part in another photo session with children in front of the magnificent baroque Artus Court building.

"I'm very pleased the twin mascots have come to Gdansk," Adamowicz said. "I can see how warmly they have been received, especially by the children. The mascots' visit is proof we are getting closer to the tournament and today we have made another step in that direction."

The mascots continued their tour in the afternoon, stopping off at the Municipal Stadium to inspect progress at the UEFA EURO 2012 venue as construction continues apace. No trip to Gdansk is complete without a walk on the pier at the beach at Brzezno, and after getting a whiff of sea air the mascots visited patients at the Medical University's children's clinic.

The tour also took in the city's biggest shopping centre, Galeria Bałtycka, which was packed out with well wishers and local dignatories also looking for a photo with the colourful pair. A hectic day concluded with the mascots appearing as guests on the local television evening news programme, Panorama.

The mascots were officially unveiled in Warsaw on 16 November since when they have been touring the eight UEFA EURO 2012 host cities. After visiting Poznan, Lviv, Donetsk, Wroclaw, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Gdansk they return to Warsaw on Saturday where their names will be announced following a public vote.
