For the first time in its 75-year history, the Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) elected a player of the year – with the 2009 award going to national team defender Martin Stocklasa who plays for SV Ried in the Austrian Bundesliga.

The Swiss-born Stocklasa, who has appeared 85 times for Liechtenstein and has played his club football with Ried since 2008, beat off competition from four rival candidates in a poll involving expert panels and a public internet vote.

In addition to honouring the former FC Zürich, FC Vaduz and 1. FC Dynamo Dresden defender, the LFV made three other awards. In the young player category, David Hasler of FC Basel 1893 was the fans and experts' pick. The 19-year-old forward has been capped nine times by the national side. Uwe Wegmann, who played professionally in the German Bundesliga, was named club coach of the year for his efforts with USV Eschen/Mauren. USV's long-serving club stalwart Gebhard Oehri took the prize for voluntary services to the domestic game.
