• Born in Flintshire, Speed left his native Wales as a teenager to join Leeds, helping them to win the English title in 1991/92 – the final season before the advent of the Premier League – and featuring in the side that lost the 1995/96 League Cup final to Aston Villa FC.

• Signed for Everton, the club he supported as a child, in the summer of 1996 and was made club captain, but moved on to Newcastle two years later. His Magpies side lost the 1998 and 1999 FA Cup finals, Speed also appearing in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League before joining Bolton in 2004.

• Became the first player to reach 500 Premier League appearances during his time at Bolton; he took that tally to 535 before moving to Sheffield United, where he played his last competitive games in November 2008.

• First capped in 1990, he made 85 international appearances for Wales, 44 of them as captain, playing his last international in 2004.

• Briefly first-team coach at Bolton, a back injury at Sheffield United midway through the 2008/09 campaign prompting Speed's full-time switch into management. Appointed Blades' boss in August 2010 but after just 20 league games he moved on to replace John Toshack as Wales manager.
