Portugal will look to maintain their perfect UEFA European Championship record against Türkiye at the BVB Stadion Dortmund, the venue for the sides' Matchday 2 meeting in UEFA EURO 2024 Group F.

Both teams kicked off the tournament with victories on 18 June. Türkiye were 3-1 winners against debutants Georgia at the BVB Stadion Dortmund thanks to second-half goals from Arda Güler (65) and substitute Kerem Aktürkoğlu (90+7) after Mert Müldür's 25th-minute opener had been cancelled out before half-time; Portugal came from behind to beat Czechia 2-1 at the Leipzig Stadium, Francisco Conceição coming off the bench to score a 92nd-minute winner with his first international goal.

The last two games between the teams have ended 3-1, Portugal booking their place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 play-off win at home to Türkiye on 24 March 2022.

Otávio (15) and Diogo Jota (42) put Fernando Santos' Portugal 2-0 up at the Estádio do Dragão, Burak Yılmaz halving the visitors' deficit in the 65th minute to set up a frantic finale that was eventually settled by Portugal substitute Matheus Nunes four minutes into added time.

Türkiye had been 3-1 friendly winners in Lisbon on 2 June 2012, Umut Bulut scoring either side of half-time (35, 52), a Pepe own goal two minutes from time sealing the win after Nani had pulled one back in the 57th minute.

Pepe had scored at the right end on Matchday 1 of EURO 2008, giving Portugal a 61st-minute lead at the Stade de Genève on 7 June 2008. Raúl Meireles wrapped up the win late on (90+3), Portugal's sixth successive victory against Türkiye.

That made it three wins from three for Portugal against Türkiye in European Championship final tournaments. The Selecção were 1-0 winners in the group stage at EURO '96, where Fernando Couto's 66th-minute goal undid a side coached by Fatih Terim, then in his first spell as Türkiye coach.

Portugal repeated the feat four years later in the EURO 2000 quarter-finals, Nuno Gomes getting both goals (44, 56) in a 2-0 win against a Türkiye side reduced to ten men by Alpay Özalan's 30th-minute red card.

Türkiye's only other win against Portugal came in the teams' first fixture, a 3-1 friendly victory in Istanbul in December 1955.

EURO facts

Türkiye

Türkiye are making their sixth EURO appearance and a third in succession.

They have been knocked out in the group stage in their last two appearances but memorably made it to the semi-finals in 2008, when they lost 3-2 to Germany in a thriller.

Türkiye's sole other knockout appearance came in 2000, when they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Portugal (0-2) having made their tournament debut four years earlier.

Şenol Güneş oversaw Türkiye's EURO 2020 campaign, his side finishing bottom of Group A without a point having lost to Italy (0-3), Wales (0-2) and Switzerland (1-3).

Stefan Kuntz took charge for the start of EURO 2024 qualifying, departing on 20 September 2023 with his side second in Group D. Vincenzo Montella was named as his replacement the following day and picked up seven points from his three qualifiers, Türkiye sealing their finals place with a 4-0 victory at home to Latvia on 15 October and securing top spot with a 1-1 closing draw in Wales.

Türkiye finished with 17 points in the section (W5 D2 L1), one above runners-up Croatia.

Türkiye's Matchday 1 game against Georgia also took place at the BVB Stadion Dortmund. That was their second game at the ground, the first a 0-0 friendly draw against Brazil on 5 June 2007.

Portugal

Portugal are making their ninth EURO appearance overall, and an eighth in succession.

Their greatest success came at EURO 2016, when an extra-time winner from substitute Éder earned a 1-0 final win against hosts France in Saint-Denis.

Portugal's defence of their title ended in a 1-0 round of 16 loss to Belgium at EURO 2020. They had finished third in Group F behind France and Germany, winning only one game – 3-0 against Hungary in their opening fixture.

With Roberto Martínez having replaced EURO-winning coach Santos after the 2022 World Cup, Portugal stormed through EURO 2024 qualifying as the only team to win every game, scoring 36 goals and conceding only two as they finished eight points clear at the top of Group J. They qualified with three matches still to play thanks to a 3-2 home win against eventual runners-up Slovakia on 13 October 2023.

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared in his sixth EURO finals on Matchday 1; he holds records for the most goals (14) and appearances (26) at the tournament.

Ronaldo hit five goals at EURO 2020, level with Czechia's Patrik Schick as the tournament's top scorer.

Pepe's appearance against Czechia on Matchday 1 made him, aged 41 years 113 days, the oldest player to feature in a European Championship final tournament.

This is Portugal's first game at the BVB Stadion Dortmund.
