• The nine group winners and nine runners-up along with the third-placed side with the best record against the teams first, second, fourth and fifth in their section qualify directly for France.

• The eight remaining third-placed teams will contest play-offs in November to determine the last four qualifiers for the finals.

Qualified: France (hosts), Iceland, Czech Republic, England, Austria (15 automatic qualifying spots and 8 play-off berths tbc)

Netherlands 0-1 Iceland

Group A
Top two: Iceland (qualified), Czech Republic (qualified)
Third: Turkey
Can still qualify: Netherlands

13 October: Latvia v Kazakhstan, Netherlands v Czech Republic, Turkey v Iceland (all 20.45)

• Both on 19 points, Iceland and the Czech Republic have qualified. With their head-to-head records identical – both sides won 2-1 at home – Iceland lead the way on goal difference.
Turkey replaced the Netherlands in third spot after defeating the Oranje 3-0 at home on Sunday. Two points ahead of the 1988 winners, Turkey will secure a play-off berth if they draw in the Czech Republic on 10 October and the Dutch lose in Kazakhstan.

Chris Coleman on Wales 0-0 Israel

Group B
Top two: Wales, Belgium
Third: Israel
Can still qualify: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus

10 October: Andorra v Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina v Wales, Israel v Cyprus (all 20.45)
13 October: Belgium v Israel, Cyprus v Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wales v Andorra (all 20.45)

Wales are assured of the play-offs after drawing 0-0 at home to third-placed Israel. Chris Coleman's team require a point from their last two matches to qualify automatically.
Belgium prevailed 1-0 away to Cyprus and will be qualified if they overcome Andorra next time out. Like Wales, Belgium are also certain of at least the play-offs.
Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot make the top two but closed the gap on Israel, in third, to two points with a 3-0 triumph over Andorra

Spain 2-0 Slovakia

Group C
Top two: Spain, Slovakia
Third: Ukraine

9 October: FYR Macedonia v Ukraine, Slovakia v Belarus, Spain v Luxembourg (all 20.45CET)
12 October:
Belarus v FYR Macedonia, Luxembourg v Slovakia, Ukraine v Spain (20.45)

Spain's wins against Slovakia and FYR Macedonia in September lifted the holders into first place. Slovakia are two points behind, three ahead of Ukraine with that trio ensured at least a play-off.
• Spain and Slovakia both qualify on 9 October with wins.

Germany 3-1 Poland

Group D

Germany's crucial win in Scotland kept them two points ahead of Poland.
• The Republic of Ireland's win against Georgia keeps them within two points of Poland and lifts them four ahead of fourth-placed Scotland.
• Germany, now assured of at least a play-off, will qualify a game early if they avoid defeat in Ireland. Poland could also reach the finals by winning if Ireland fail to beat Germany.
• Scotland must beat Poland and hope Ireland do not win to stay in contention.

San Marino 0-6 England

Group E
Top two: England (qualified), Switzerland
Third: Slovenia
Can still qualify: Estonia, Lithuania

9 October: England v Estonia, Slovenia v Lithuania, Switzerland v San Marino (all 20.45)

Estonia v Switzerland, Lithuania v England, San Marino v Slovenia (all 20.45)

England were the only side to qualify with three games to go and they then beat Switzerland to keep up the sole remaining 100% record and win the group.
• Switzerland's 3-2 comeback win against Slovenia looks a crucial result; they have a three-point gap to their third-placed rivals. Estonia's loss in Slovenia moved them back to fourth, two points behind. Lithuania are one further back thanks to their last-gasp winner against San Marino.
• Slovenia have the head-to-head advantage over Switzerland so a win against Lithuania would definitely keep them in automatic qualification until the final game even if the Swiss beat San Marino.

Faroe Islands 1-3 Northern Ireland

Group F
Top two: Northern Ireland, Romania
Third: Hungary
Can still qualify: Finland

8 October: Hungary v Faroe Islands, Northern Ireland v Greece, Romania v Finland (all 20.45)

Romania were held 0-0 by Greece but are still one point behind Northern Ireland, and now three in front of Hungary, Finland ended the Faroe Islands' hopes and are within three points of third place.
• Northern Ireland will qualify with victory in either of their October games. Hungary have the head-to-head edge over Romania if they can draw level on points.

Can still qualify: Montenegro

9 October: Liechtenstein v Sweden, Moldova v Russia, Montenegro v Austria (all 20.45)

Austria booked their place in France with a win in Sweden that confirms them in first place.
Russia are now second, two points ahead of Sweden, thanks to their win which ended Liechtenstein's hopes. Montenegro are within a point of Sweden.
