Germany condemned luckless Scotland to an early exit from EURO '92 as goals from Karl-Heinz Riedle and Stefan Effenberg earned the Group B spoils.

Andy Roxburgh's side looked to have the measure of their opponents, and were on top until Riedle beat Andy Goram on 29 minutes, after Jürgen Klinsmann had managed to shield the ball from Richard Gough. Effenberg got his name on the scoresheet two minutes after the break, but his effort took a cruel deflection off the foot of defender Maurice Malpas.

EURO 1992: All you need to know

Scotland had made a positive start as they looked to make up for the disappointment of losing 1-0 to the Netherlands in their opening game, and while they were not outclassed again, they received scant reward for their efforts in Norrkoping. Tellingly, they had Germany rocking on their heels before Riedle scored the opener for Berti Vogts' world champions.

The second goal was another reminder that the Scots' luck was out but Germany could take credit for fielding a more aggressive side, with Klinsmann and Andreas Möller restored to the starting lineup. Although goalkeeper Bodo Illgner had a busy game, Germany had to contend with the loss of Stefan Reuter and Guido Buchwald to head injuries, but still hit the post through Möller and Hässler.

It was all overseen by referee Guy Goethals, whose father Raymond was Belgium coach in the 1972 finals – the winners that year? Germany.
