Montenegro made some amends for a miserable defeat by Moldova in their final 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier, Mirko Vučinić and Žarko Tomašević their UEFA EURO 2016 Group G goalscorers.
The Montenegro captain made the breakthrough three minutes into first-half added time but coach Branko Brnović could never quite relax as long as there was just one goal in it, memories of the 5-2 reverse his side suffered the last time Ion Caras's men were in town perhaps playing on their minds. However, there was relief in the 73rd minute as central defender Tomašević bundled in his first international goal.
There was little let-up for Moldova in the first half after Fatos Bećiraj snatched at an early chance for Montenegro. Goalkeeper Ilie Cebanu foiled Dejan Damjanović, Vučinić headed over from close range and then Damjanović skidded a low attempt off the outside of the post. Cebanu saved from a long-range Vučinić effort two minutes into added time, yet was left standing from the resulting corner as the Montenegro captain rose to nod in Nemanja Nikolić's corner from the right.
Moldova looked to pick up the pace after the interval but spurned their best chance as Eugeniu Sidorenco failed to direct Maxim Antoniuc's firm cross towards the target. Montenegro kept the pressure on their guests and at length got their reward, Tomašević steering in at the far post after Nikolić's low ball from the right was allowed to flash across goal.
