The Faroe Islands recorded their first UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying win, which left their hosts Greece bottom of Group F, after Jóan Edmundsson scored the only goal of the game in Piraeus.
The visitors duly traded places with their opponents at the bottom of the group after posing a counterattacking danger throughout the contest and deserving their victory, having scored a 61st-minute clincher after Greece goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis had foiled them on a number of occasions.
The first chance fell to Claudio Ranieri's home team as Panagiotis Kone sent his 14th-minute header centimetres wide from a corner, but the Faroes hit the foot of the post from Brandur Olsen's free-kick three minutes later. Nikos Karelis and Lazaros Christodoulopoulos also went close for Greece yet could only put their efforts into the side netting, just before the Faroese threatened twice before half-time. Karnezis was fully extended to keep out a looping Fródi Benjaminsen header before denying Edmundsson in a one-on-one situation in the final action of the half.
Lars Olsen's men went even closer to the opening goal when Benjaminsen swept an effort against the post six minutes after the restart, but they did get it ten minutes later. Sølvi Vatnhamar's right-wing cross came out to Brandur Olsen on the edge of the box and he fired an effort that was heading wide, only for Edmundsson to steer it past Karnezis.
Kone missed a great chance to equalise when he clipped a shot over the bar from close range before striking the woodwork with a lofted attempt a minute from the end, although an equaliser would have been cruel on the eventual victors. It was the northern nation's first competitive win since June 2011 when they beat Estonia at home in a EURO qualifier.
