Slovenia made light work of San Marino to stay second in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E, setting a new national record for the country's biggest win in the process.

The home side were positive from the outset in Ljubljana, although it was San Marino's Giovanni Bonini who had the first attempt on goal. He missed the target, however, and that proved to be the only shot the visitors mustered.

Josip Iličić showed how it should be done in the tenth minute, marking his return to the squad after a six-month absence. Valter Birsa split the defence with a pinpoint pass and Iličić rounded Elia Benedettini to slot into the empty net.

That marked the start of a long night for Benedettini, with Slovenia managing 35 shots in total. Srečko Katanec's team were relentness in their pressure but, despite Boštjan Cesar and Jasmin Kurtič hitting the crossbar and Birsa, Iličić and Milivoje Novakovič passing up great chances, it remained 1-0 at the break.

The floodgates quickly opened in the second period, however. Kevin Kampl curled the ball into the bottom corner beautifully from the edge of the area to double the lead within four minutes of the resumption, and less than 60 seconds later it was 3-0, Novakovič setting up Andraž Struna for his first international goal.

Struna quickly returned the favour, crossing to present Novakovič with a simple header. Dejan Lazarevič was next to open his Slovenia account, slicing through the Sanmarinese rearguard to net from an angle in the 73rd minute. With two minutes remaining Branko Ilič also got his first goal for his country, nodding in Birsa's corner to wrap up Slovenia's record win.
