Böde double keeps Hungary's hopes alive

Hungary 2-1 Faroe Islands
Dániel Böde came off the bench at half-time to score twice in the last half-hour and close the gap to second-placed Romania in Group F.

  • Final games: Greece v Hungary, Faroe Islands v Romania (Sunday)

Dániel Böde came off the bench to score twice in nine second-half minutes and give Hungary a win against the Faroe Islands that keeps alive their UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying hopes.

Needing a victory to keep the pressure on Group F's top two, Hungary were first to threaten as Nemanja Nikolić flicked wide – but there was an early surprise in store from the Faroese. Jóan Edmundsson slipped a pass through to Róaldur Jakobsen, who cleverly turned Roland Juhász to slide a shot past Gábor Király at the near post.

Hungary struggled to respond to that setback and did not extend Gunnar Nielsen until the half-hour, the Faroes goalkeeper getting down to gather Adám Bódi's shot. The same player went even closer in first-half added time, his effort nearly squirming under the keeper, who gathered at the second attempt.

Home coach Bernd Storck introduced Böde at half-time and the substitute was quickly involved, being foiled by Nielsen having got away down the right. Hungary kept coming and were finally rewarded three minutes past the hour as Böde rose at the far post to nod Tamás Kádár's deep left-wing cross into the corner of the net.

With the Faroese resolve finally broken, Hungary were in no mood to loosen their grip on the game and took the lead eight minutes later. Again Böde supplied the finish, collecting Nikolić's pass and twisting past two defenders before thumping beyond Nielsen to move the Magyars within a point of second-placed Romania in Group F. The visitors finished with ten men after captain Atli Gregersen received a second yellow card in the final seconds.
