Belgium stroll past Andorra to qualify

Andorra 1-4 Belgium
Radja Nainggolan, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Laurent Depoitre scored as Belgium secured a spot at the UEFA European Championship.

  • Belgium reach UEFA European Championship for fifth time in their history
  • Eden Hazard scores one, misses another second-half spot kick
  • Andorra now without a win in 49 European qualifying matches
  • Ildefons Lima converts penalty for Pyrenean hosts
  • Final games: Wales v Andorra, Belgium v Israel (Tuesday)

Belgium booked their place at UEFA EURO 2016 with a resounding victory against Andorra, as the Red Devils climbed above Wales in Group B.

Facing opponents they had beaten 6-0 in the reverse fixture a year ago, Marc Wilmots's men delivered a performance as authoritative as it was exciting to see off a spirited Andorra side who are now without a win in 49 European qualifying games.

Goals by Radja Nainggolan, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and debutant Laurent Depoitre proved too great a deficit for Koldo Alvarez's team to overturn, despite Ildefons Lima's 51st-minute penalty offering a flicker of hope.

The hosts' early resolve lasted just 19 minutes as Nainggolan cut through a maze of onrushing midfielders before evading goalkeeper Ferran Pol with an arced effort which deflected off Marc Rebés's knee on its way into the net.

There was to be no renaissance in fortunes for the Pyrenean outfit at the Estadi Nacional, however, as De Bruyne widened the gap three minutes before the break.

After Óscar Sonejee was cautioned for a foul on Hazard, De Bruyne stepped up to curl the resulting free-kick around the wall, hitting both the post and the goalkeeper along its route.

Eden Hazard converts his penalty

Wilmots was made to sweat six minutes after the interval as Jan Vertonghen bundled Victor Moreira to the turf in the Belgian box. Lima promptly sent Simon Mignolet the wrong way. The fourth goal of the principality's Group B campaign, it matched their highest-ever qualifying tally.

It was merely a minor setback for the visitors, though, as Sonejee handled in his own area in the 56th minute. In front of the Belgium contingent, Hazard stepped up to place his penalty past Pol.

Eight minutes later Dries Mertens burst down the right and spotted Depoitre in space. With just enough room to poke the ball past the goalkeeper, the 25-year-old forward celebrated his debut goal with the visiting supporters.

There was still time for Hazard to be given – but miss – another spot-kick opportunity after Gabriel Riera knocked De Bruyne's corner away with his arm. He tamely directed his second penalty straight at Pol, yet Hazard's uncharacteristic failure could not mar a memorable night for Belgium.
