• Born in Istanbul, Engin Fırat never played professional football, but after graduating in Germany, has made his career in the sport.

• Started out in 1997, aged 27, as an assistant to Horst Hrubesch at Samsunspor before taking a similar role with a number of clubs in Turkey, Germany and South Korea over the next decade.

• Moved to Iran in 2007, where he coached several clubs and assisted Ali Daei during his time as national team boss.

• Between 2015 and 2017, Fırat was sporting director at Kardemir Karabükspor and then Dallas City.

• Named Moldova coach in late October 2019, replacing Semen Altman for the final two games of their UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying campaign.
