Late goals from Manuel Arboleda and Mateusz Możdżeń gave new KKS Lech Poznań coach José Maria Bakero a winning start as they defeated Manchester City FC 3-1 to supplant their opponents at the top of Group A.

A tight contest looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw before Arboleda's fortunate headed goal with four minutes remaining. Możdżeń then hit a superb third to seal the points after Emmanuel Adebayor had cancelled out Dimitrije Injac's first-half opener.

The early signs were ominous for the hosts. City went close twice within 60 seconds when Adebayor had a shot cleared off the line before Dedryck Boyata's tame header was only just kept out by an off-balance Jasmin Burić. Lech began to get going with Semir Štilić and Sławomir Peszko going close from distance and it was a warning City did not heed as, on the half-hour mark, they were behind.

Sergei Krivets' hopeful ball into the area was only half-cleared and Injac pounced, driving a crisp low shot across Shay Given from 25 metres. City found it hard to regain the initiative as Lech combined hard work with neat and tidy approach play. Roberto Mancini's side did not threaten again until after the break, but when they did it proved incisive.

James Milner's 51st-minute corner was met powerfully by Adebayor and although Burić parried his effort, the Togo striker followed up the rebound to slam in from close range – City's 100th goal in UEFA competition. However, the goal did nothing to knock Lech out of their stride and they redoubled their efforts.

It looked as if they would not receive their reward, though, until Boyata's clearing header inadvertently hit Arboleda and rolled past the helpless Given. Możdżeń then put the icing on the cake to seal Lech's first win against English opposition.
