Malmö seek redemption against AZ

AZ Alkmaar will hope to end their run of 14 European away games without a win as they travel to Malmö FF who will look to take advantage to claim their first points of Group G.

Malmö FF are already out of the running for a UEFA Europa League round of 32 place, but the Swedish club will look to end a shaky run in Group G against an AZ Alkmaar side without a European away win since 2007.

Previous meetings
• The Dutch side won 4-1 when the teams met for the first time on matchday one. Jozy Altidore found the target with a tremendous long-range strike 21 minutes in, and Rasmus Elm (32) converted a penalty against his compatriots before Adam Maher (39) beat Johan Dahlin for a third time before the break. Brett Holman's great run and finish (49) made it 4-0, with Daniel Larsson's reply from the spot (72) little consolation for Malmö.

• Malmö have played two-legged ties against Dutch sides twice, losing out to Feyenoord (agg: 5-1) in the second round of the 1979/80 UEFA Cup and AFC Ajax (agg: 3-2) in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals. In terms of individual games, their record is W1 D1 L3 (W1 D1 L0 at home).

• AZ's only previous experience of Swedish opposition came in last season's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, where they eliminated IFK Göteborg, winning 2-0 in the Netherlands before a 1-0 defeat in Gothenburg.

Match background
• Malmö have won only once in seven European games since beating Rangers FC in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. A 2-0 victory against GNK Dinamo Zagreb could not make up for a 4-1 loss in the first leg of their play-off tie, and they have lost all four of their UEFA Europa League group stage games.

• AZ are eager to bring an end to a 14-game wait for a victory on the road in European competition; they have recorded six draws and eight defeats on their continental travels since winning 1-0 at FC Paços de Ferreira in a 20 September 2007 UEFA Cup first round game.

Team facts
• Malmö have conceded 13 goals in this season's group stage; more than any other side in the competition.

• Malmö are five goals shy of their 150th in UEFA club competiton, but the next time they concede it will be the 150th that has gone against them. This will be their 114th UEFA game.

• Malmö's Miiko Albornoz celebrates his 21st birthday on the day of the game. He has yet to feature in the group stage but made a cameo appearance in the Swedish side's 2-0 play-off win at home against Dinamo Zagreb.

• AZ feature Swedish internationals Rasmus Elm and Pontus Wernbloom, who also played for the Under-21 selection, a team Malmö goalkeeper Johan Dahlin and outfield players Jasmin Sudic, Jiloan Hamad, Jimmy Durmaz and Agon Mehmeti have represented.

• Elm played for Kalmar FF before joining AZ in 2009. Wernbloom moved from IFK to Alkmaar in the same year.

• Malmö boss Rikard Norling's midfield career was cut short by injury, but he made his name as a coach, taking charge of AIK Solna and Assyriska Föreningen before replacing FC København-bound Roland Nilsson as coach of the Swedish champions.

• AZ boss Gertjan Verbeek spent most of his playing career as a defender at sc Heerenveen barring a season on loan at Heracles Almelo. He has twice coached Heracles either side of stints in charge of Heerenveen and (very briefly) Feyenoord. AZ brought him in at the start of the 2010/11 campaign.
