Tottenham secured their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 as Harry Kane grabbed the winner in Baku to leave Qarabağ's prospects of advancing hanging by a thread.

Spurs struck the woodwork twice before Kane turned in a header from very close range in the 78th minute. The points put Mauricio Pochettino's men through and leave Qarabağ needing to beat Anderlecht on matchday six while hoping Tottenham see off Monaco.

Qarabağ have been excellent at home this season and impressed again. Dani Quintana and Afran Ismayilov saw angled shots test Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal, while an off-balance Maksim Medvedev unluckily struck a dropping ball off target from the edge of the area. The visitors had plenty of play too and pulled the home defence out of position through the movement of front three Kane, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min, yet rarely tested keeper Ibrahim Šehić. Ryan Mason and Toby Alderweireld's efforts from range were too close to the custodian, while Kane's scuffed attempt lacked power.

Things opened up for Tottenham after the interval and Son's neat feet worked the Korean into space before curling against the bar from 20 metres. Dele Alli matched his team-mate by rattling the post after a deep cross was met by his first-time shot, but the breakthrough arrived with 12 minutes remaining. Eriksen whipped a corner in from the left, Son flicked on at the front post and Kane was there to thump in an unstoppable headed from just a metre.
