Europe beckons for Modrica

A penalty shoot-out victory has given FK Modrica their first Bosnia-Herzegovnian Cup.

Decisive penalty
The Mazima-based side, who only just completed their first season in the Bosnia-Herzegovnian Premier League, won 4-2 on penalties against FK Borac Banjaluka following a 1-1 draw at Sarajevo's Koševo stadium. Dario Dmjanovic scored the winning penalty which puts Modrica in next season's UEFA Cup.

'A great success'
Sinisa Djuric had given Borac a 40th-minute lead but Modrica struck back in the 71st minute, with Zoran Novakovic heading home. "This is a great success, especially as we have secured our top-flight status too," said Modrica coach Mitar Lukic. "The match was not great. The penalties decided everything."

Self-inflicted wounds
While Modrica could look forward to a first European campaign, Borac coach Nikola Rakojevic was left to wonder what might have been. "We were the architects of our own demise," he said. "We were leading, but my players started to defend too deep, handing the initiative to Modrica."
