Strike suspension lifts Danish duo

Brøndby IF and Aalborg BK will be at full strength on Thursday after the Danish player's strike was suspended.

Temporary halt
Brøndby IF and Aalborg BK are due to meet FK Ventspils and FK Zalgiris respectively in their second qualifying round second-leg matches. It had been thought the industrial action in place since Tuesday 17 August would lead to weakened teams being fielded but, following discussions overnight, a temporary halt has been called to the strike.

Optimism
The joint decision between the Players' Union (Spillerforeningen) and the Association of League Clubs (Divisionsforeningen) also means that the Danish Superliga will be played as normal from the coming weekend. Following the latest round of talks, both sides are also optimistic that a permanent solution can be found to the dispute, which relates to the issue of compensation for clubs when players under 23 leave on the expiry of their contracts.

'Near to a solution'
"It seems we are near to a solution to our problems," said Palle Sørensen, chairman of the Players' Union. Brøndby IF director Per Bjerregaard, who was one of the clubs' representatives at the negotiations, added: "Together with the Players' Union we have ensured that Danish football will not be sent out into the darkness for many years to come. The two remaining Danish teams in the UEFA Cup qualifiers can now send out their strongest lineups and thereby fight to improve Denmark´s position in the UEFA ranking list."

Driving seat
Tomorrow night, Brøndby are at home against Ventspils, having drawn 0-0 in Latvia in the first leg on 12 August. AaB, meanwhile, secured a 3-1 victory against Zalgiris in Vilnius to put themselves firmly in the driving seat for the return trip by the Lithuanian side.
