CSKA enjoy Russian landmark

PFC CSKA Moskva have cemented their place "in Russian football history" by progressing to the UEFA Cup final.

Valeriy Gazzaev, CSKA coach
The atmosphere inside the stadium was fantastic and our supporters really got behind us throughout. I'm delighted we will now represent Russia in a European final - this is a perfect gift for our [second world war] veterans ahead of Victory Day on 9 May. One of our tasks was to play cautiously and to avoid collecting suspensions for the final, but as hosts the onus was on us to attack. We did just that, the early goal creating more space for our strikers which allowed them to showcase their skills. It did not bother me that Parma didn't field their best team - even if they put out a team of children against us again tomorrow I'd be happy.

Daniel Carvalho, CSKA forward
I know CSKA have become the first Russian club to make it to a UEFA Cup final but that cannot be attributed just to me. Everyone worked together out there on the pitch and everyone deserves their place in the history of Russian football. My two goals were the most important of my career.

Igor Akinfeev, CSKA goalkeeper
The quick goal helped us - once we scored I knew we would win. The game was very tough but we couldn't expect otherwise with a place in the UEFA Cup final at stake. If we carry on like this, the [UEFA] Champions League final will follow soon enough.

Pietro Carmignani, Parma coach
We have no regrets. I don't think we could have done much more than we did today. I won't talk about the firework that hit [goalkeeper Luca] Bucci, only about the game because I want to congratulate CSKA. They proved themselves a better side than us, particularly physically, and were obviously fresher. That said, the game was quite even until they scored the second. The UEFA Cup has been a great adventure for us but now we have to focus again on our domestic campaign because we have another crucial game on Sunday.
