Lithuanian side FK Ekranas have appointed the 34-year-old Darius Butkus as their new head coach following the dismissal of Saulius Širmelis last month.
Lithuanian side FK Ekranas have named Darius Butkus as their new coach, promoting him from a similar position with their reserve team following the dismissal of Saulius Širmelis.
Ekranas had appointed Širmelis before the start of the season but he was sacked on 20 June following a 1-0 defeat against FK Vetra. Goalkeeping coach Arvidas Skrupskis became interim coach for two subsequent matches prior to the appointment of the 34-year-old Butkus, who played for the Panevezys side for a decade, and won the A Lyga title in 1993. "I wasted no time accepting Ekranas' offer because this is a young a talented side," said Butkus, who has signed a contract until the end of the season. "Our maximum task is to win the league, but the minimum would be a top-three finish." Ekranas currently sit fifth in the ten-team table but are only five points adrift of leaders FBK Kaunas and will face B36 Tórshavn of the Faroe Islands in the UEFA Cup first qualifying round.
