R. Standard de Liège are next as Hamburger SV continue their dream of winning the inaugural UEFA Europa League on home territory, though the all-Spanish tie between Valencia CF and Club Atlético de Madrid is perhaps the most eye-catching to come out of today's quarter-final draw.

Hamburg survived a serious scare against RSC Anderlecht last night and they will now meet another Belgian side, Standard. There were a few groans in the auditorium at the House of European Football when domestic rivals Valencia and Atlético were paired, but there is a fair bit of history between SL Benfica and Liverpool FC too.

Liverpool beat Benfica in the last eight on their way to winning 1978 and 1984 European Champion Clubs' Cups, though they will need to be at their best to complete the hat-trick. Benfica knocked out Olympique de Marseille to reach this stage, a good omen as the last two sides to win the UEFA Cup also defeated the French side.

That game was one of several highlights as the round of 16 concluded in thrilling style, eight second-leg matches producing 34 goals. Fulham FC provided four as they mounted a stirring comeback against Juventus and their reward is a meeting with the other newcomers to this stage of a major UEFA competition, VfL Wolfsburg.

Draw process and fixtures
Today's draw in Nyon, Switzerland, was without seeding or country protection. As well as the quarter-finals, the draw was also made for the semi-finals, meaning sides know who they will meet should they progress. It was conducted by UEFA competitions director Giorgio Marchetti and Hamburg final ambassador Uwe Seeler.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals are played on a home-and-away basis.
