Birmingham City FC became the first English team to win at Club Brugge KV in eight attempts, with substitute Chris Wood thrilled to snatch a 2-1 UEFA Europa League victory with a goal ten minutes into added time. After a clash of heads had earlier caused the Group H game to be suspended – the unfortunate Pablo Ibáñez being taken off the pitch on a stretcher – the visitors were particularly pleased to have triumphed for their stricken team-mate, according to goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.

Chris Wood, Birmingham forward
It was a nice goal and a great cross by Marlon King. this is the first one I've scored in the 100th minute. Our fans were in great voice tonight, with over 5,000 people supporting us here. To concede after two or three minutes was gut-wrenching but we showed our strength in the second half.

Boaz Myhill, Birmingham goalkeeper
The reason we had to play that long was because of a horrible injury to one of our friends, but we huddled together and said: 'Let's do it for Pablo.' He's up and about now — he doesn't know how it happened, but he's smiling. This is the first time we've been in European competition for a long time, and our travelling support gives you that extra something you need when you're up against it.

Colin Coosemans, Club Brugge goalkeeper
We could have scored to make it 2-1 ourselves, and we didn't, then in the last minute they scored. Of course, it's very disappointing. It happened to us in Braga, when we scored in the last minute, so now we know how it is to be on the other side. Six points out of nine is a decent result so far, but it also means that we will have to take more points if we are to get through.
