Manchester United got the better of fellow UEFA Europa League hopefuls Liverpool on Sunday as several of the last-32 contenders continued their domestic campaigns.
Wayne Rooney made the difference in the high-profile meeting at Anfield as United climbed within seven points of the Premier League summit against ninth-placed Liverpool. Old rivals met in France too, where St-Étienne edged the 100th Rhone derby in Ligue 1 against Lyon.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Fiorentina missed the chance to go third in Serie A after succumbing 2-0 at AC Milan, with Napoli still top courtesy of their victory against Sassuolo earlier in the weekend. In Portugal, Sporting CP's lead is down to two points after they were held on Friday, though third-placed Porto could not take advantage as they suffered a surprise loss to Guimarães.
