Fiorentina rule out Gonzalo Rodríguez

Central defender Gonzalo Rodríguez will sit out the first leg of ACF Fiorentina's round of 32 opener at Esbjerg fB, giving coach Vincenzo Montella more rearguard issues.

ACF Fiorentina will be without Gonzalo Rodríguez for Thursday's UEFA Europa League round of 32 game at Esbjerg fB after the former Argentina centre-back suffered a thigh injury in training.

The 29-year-old, who has scored twice in seven UEFA Europa League appearances this season, sustained a first-degree strain to his thigh muscle and is sure to miss the first leg in Denmark, though he could return for the decider in Florence next week. "He will undergo further tests in ten days," read a Fiorentina statement.

The former Villarreal CF player's absence is a blow to Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella, who is also shorn of the injured Stefan Savić in defence. However, there was better news regarding winger Juan Cuadrado, who injured a calf in Monday's training session, only for a scan to rule out muscle damage. "His condition will be monitored in the next two days in order to evaluate his availability against Esbjerg," Fiorentina said.
