Italian clubs led the way into the fourth round of the UEFA Cup after a thrilling night of action across Europe.

Vieri hat-trick
Christian Vieri hit a hat-trick for Internazionale FC as they beat Ipswich Town 4-1, while Parma AC and Milan AC went through against Brøndby IF and Sporting Clube de Portugal respectively. One Italian team not celebrating were AC Fiorentina, who were knocked out by Lille OSC.

Sonny delight
Another three-goal hero was Sonny Anderson. The Brazilian’s treble ensured a stunning fightback for Olympique Lyonnais against Club Brugge KV. The French club were trailing 4-1 from the first leg but won 3-0 on Thursday to go through via the away-goals rule.

Mixed fortunes
Scottish rivals Celtic FC and Rangers FC had mixed fortunes in penalty shoot-outs. Celtic were eliminated by last season’s UEFA Champions League runners-up Valencia CF while Rangers triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain FC.

Valencia still involved
Valencia are the only Spanish side left in the competition after FC Slovan Liberec’s 5-2 aggregate success over RCD Mallorca. The Czech side won 2-1 in Spain to move into the last 16 of the competition.

Servette win in Berlin
There is also only one English club still involved after Ipswich's exit. Leeds United AFC drew 2-2 with Grasshopper-Club but eased through 4-3 on aggregate after their 2-1 win in Switzerland two weeks ago. One Swiss team that did progress was Servette FC, who recorded a stunning 3-0 away win over Hertha BSC Berlin in Germany.
