Hamburg reward Hesl promise

It may be tough deputising for a goalkeeper who has not missed a league game since 2007, but Wolfgang Hesl was delighted to sign a two-year contract extension at Hamburger SV.

Hamburger SV have rewarded No2 goalkeeper Wolfgang Hesl with a two-year contract extension which runs until summer 2012.

Hesl, 24, signed from lowly FC Amberg in January 2004 and has progressed through the ranks at HSV to provide back-up to first-choice keeper Frank Rost. The 36-year-old Rost, however, has not missed a Bundesliga match since joining from FC Schalke 04 in January 2007 (112 games).

Hesl has appeared four times in Hamburg's run to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals and is highly regarded by the club's management. "Wolfgang's development has been outstanding so the contract extension is a logical extension of this," said coach Bruno Labbadia. Hesl added: "I'm glad to be staying."
