Club Atlético de Madrid revived their UEFA Europa League hopes after Sergio Agüero's return from injury inspired last year's winners to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Rosenborg BK.

Going into their encounter against Nils Arne Eggen's side having collected just one point from their opening two Group B encounters, Los Rojiblancos enjoyed a better start here with Diego Godín heading in José Antonio Reyes's cross after 18 minutes. The introduction of Agüero in the second half inspired the hosts to close out the game, the Argentinian finding the net in the 66th minute before providing Diego Costa with a third.

Chasing a 22nd Norwegian Premier League title, the visitors were chasing their opponents for the majority of the opening period and they had goalkeeper Daniel Örlund to thank for keeping the score at 1-0, the Swede reacting well to keep out Costa's point-blank effort in the 32nd minute before pushing away Diego Forlán's dangerous cross moments later.

For all of their first half dominance, however, the hosts were close to going in on level terms at the break. Watching a hopeful ball over the top, Morten Moldskred found himself behind Godín before diverting a shot against the base of the post while Per Ciljan Skjelbred's follow-up flashed narrowly wide of Joel's far post.

Normal service was resumed after the restart, with the UEFA Super Cup winners looking to extend their advantage; seconds after the arrival of Agüero they had done so. Simão's looping pass to the right found Tomáš Ujfaluši who quickly released Reyes and when the winger picked out Agüero's run he managed to wriggle free of the defence before sweeping the ball in. The 22-year-old then turned provider, playing a delightful chipped pass in for Costa who headed over Örlund to give his side a convincing 3-0 win.
