Villarreal CF captain Gonzalo will sit out the remainder of the season after suffering a leg fracture during the Yellow Submarine's 5-1 UEFA Europa League quarter-final victory over FC Twente.

The central defender was replaced by Joan Capdevila after 71 minutes of the first-leg encounter, with tests confirming that he had fractured the fibula bone in his lower left leg. He will undergo corrective surgery on Friday.

Argentinian international Gonzalo, who turns 27 on Sunday, had featured in ten of Villarreal's 11 UEFA Europa League games since the start of the group stage, and also scored once in 23 Spanish Liga fixtures.

Fourth-placed Villarreal take on their neighbours Valencia CF, who sit third, in the Liga on Sunday before heading to the Netherlands for their UEFA Europa League decider on Thursday.
