Knee surgery sidelines Ambrosini

Massimo Ambrosini will miss both legs of Milan AC's UEFA Cup tie with Dutch club Roda JC.

Massimo Ambrosini will miss both legs of Milan AC's fourth-round UEFA Cup tie with Dutch club Roda JC after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.

Carrie off
The Italian international was carried off on a stretcher after 30 minutes in Milan's 1-1 Serie A draw with AC Perugia on Sunday. The game marked an end to his second attempt this season to return to action after tearing knee ligaments in January 2001, an injury which kept him out for ten months.

Injury woe
Ambrosini's previous comeback was in December, but he was then ruled out for a further month. "The time of his return to action will be four to five weeks, if there are no complications," Milan's website reported on Monday.

International ambitions
Ambrosini's latest injury could hamper his hopes of making the Italy squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals. Capped eight times, the player was not in this week's party to face the United States but was included in the squad that reached the final of EURO 2000™.
