UEFA Europa League contenders FC Internazionale Milano have strengthened their defence with the signing of Argentinian Matías Silvestre on loan from US Città di Palermo, while Uruguayan forward Diego Forlán has left the club.

Silvestre, 27, impressed at the heart of the Rosanero defence last term after a switch from Calcio Catania, where he made 118 Serie A appearances between 2008 and 2011. He is also a two-time Copa Libertadores winner with CA Boca Juniors, his first club.

Silvestre will be the temporary replacement for Brazilian Lúcio, who left Inter for Juventus on a free transfer earlier this week. The Nerazzurri have an option to make the signing permanent next summer. Silvestre is the second Argentinian to sign for Inter this summer following Rodrigo Palacio's arrival from Genoa CFC.

Meanwhile, Uruguayan forward Forlán has departed the club after just one season, in which injuries limited him to 18 games and two goals. The former Club Atlético de Madrid man had another year left on his contract, but reached a termination agreement with Inter and has signed for Brazilian club SC Internacional de Porto Alegre.
