The 2011/12 campaign will live long in the memory at Athletic Club. They may ultimately have failed to end a 28-year wait for a major trophy, but their performances were something to behold.
With a breathless brand of football they reached the final of both the UEFA Europa League and the Copa del Rey before eventually losing to Club Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona respectively. Back in both competitions this term, Marcelo Bielsa's side are once again hoping to challenge for silverware.
"It is true that the Europa League experience was beautiful," striker Fernando Llorente told UEFA.com. "We experienced moments which I think have made us grow and develop further in all aspects. And I hope those experiences will help us to improve and make us stronger and more consistent."
