Impressive campaign
Schmidt joined AaB midway through the 2001/02 campaign and became a first-team regular this season, as the club reached the Danish Cup final where they lost to FC København but secured a UEFA Cup berth. He also made 25 league appearances and scored six goals, including one at the Brøndby Stadion in September, to help AaB to fifth place in the table.
'The best club'
However, he turned down the offer of a new contract to become a free agent, and will now hope to represent Brøndby in the UEFA Cup instead. He said: "I chose Brøndby because I think they're the best club in Denmark, and Michael Laudrup is a very exciting coach."
