Real Betis Balompié continue to strengthen their squad ahead of a UEFA Europa League play-off in August, with RCD Espanyol captain Joan Verdú arriving at the Liga side on a free transfer.

A product of FC Barcelona's youth setup, the 30-year-old midfielder has agreed a four-year deal with the Verdiblancos, who registered a seventh-place Liga finish under Pepe Mel last term. Verdú scored 23 goals in 144 top-flight appearances during four seasons at Espanyol, the club he joined from RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2009. He links up with fellow new recruits in Chuli, Danish international goalkeeper Stephan Andersen, and midfielders Juanfran and Lorenzo Reyes at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.
