Deadline day: UEFA Europa League transfers

PAOK FC, Sevilla FC, FC Girondins de Bordeaux and SS Lazio were among the UEFA Europa League contenders involved on deadline day. UEFA.com rounds up the movers and shakers.

PAOK FC have signed two Greek internationals. Left-back Giorgos Tzavellas, 25, arrives on a free transfer from AS Monaco FC, signing a four-year contract. He said: "I have come to a prestigious, well organised club with great supporters. It doesn’t get bigger than that for a professional player. He is joined by Sotiris Ninis from Parma FC on a one-year loan. The 23-year old attacking midfielder, who made his Panathinaikos FC debut aged 16, said: "I am very happy to join a team full of Greek international players. I wanted the next step in my career to be a solid one, in a familiar environment where I can adapt easily. PAOK provides this environment and I am very satisfied to be here and I will do my best to help the team achieve their objectives."

European debutants CS Pandurii Târgu Jiu have replaced Evian Thonon Gaillard-bound midfielder Dan Nistor with 20-year-old Chilean forward Diego Rubio on a season-long loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal with the option to buy.

NK Maribor have loaned Macedonian attacking midfielder Agim Ibraimi to Cagliari Calcio, with Uruguay playmaker Pablo Ceppelini going the other way. The 25-year-old Ibraimi has the option to make his deal permanent at the end of the campaign. "I have always wanted to play in Seria A, so it's my childhood dream come true,"  Ibraimi told the Cagliari website.

Esbjerg fB have signed Norway Under-21 captain Mushaga Bakenga on a one-year loan from Club Brugge KV, with the attacker having spent last season on loan with their local rivals KSV Cercle Brugge. "We have spent some time on finding the right club for me, and I have heard positive things about Esbjerg from my team-mate Jesper Jørgensen, who is a former Esbjerg player," explained the 21-year-old. " I am looking forward to giving something back to Esbjerg so that both parties get something out of the deal." Meanwhile, Denmark Under-21 international Ryan Laursen has penned a four-year contract with the club. "Esbjerg have impressed me in recent years, with their support, stadium and way of playing," said the full-back who joins from Lyngby BK.

Eintracht Frankfurt have taken FC Schalke 04 midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta on loan for the rest of the 2013/14 season. The versatile Switzerland midfielder, who can play on the wings or in a holding position, joined Schalke from Bayer 04 Leverkusen a year ago but the 20202 UEFA European Under-17 Championship winner was unable to secure a regular starting place, and has moved partly to keep his FIFA World Cup hopes alive. "I am incredibly happy that it has just worked out and am looking forward to getting to know the city and the team," the 28-year-old said. "But first I have to travel to the national team and will return to Frankfurt together with Pirmin Schwegler in ten days."

Sevilla FC have taken 22-year-old Russian forward Denis Cheryshev on loan for the season from Real Madrid CF. Cheryshev, who has lived in Spain since his father Dmitri joined Real Sporting de Gijón in 1996 and has been at Madrid since 2002, made his senior club debut last November, when he also earned his international bow against the United States. He also took part in June's UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Mehdi Carcela-González has rejoined R. Standard de Liège from fellow UEFA Europa League contenders FC Anji Makhachkala for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old Morocco midfielder was a Standard youth product and helped them win the 2008/09 title and 2010/11 Belgian Cup before his two years at Anji, which yielded one goal in 31 league games.

FC Girondins de Bordeaux have loaned Czech Republic midfielderJaroslav Plašil, 31, to Calcio Catania. Plasil joined Bordeaux in 2009 and has proved a key player for the French Cup holders.

Albania goalkeeper Etrit Berisha has ended an eight-year association with Swedish outfit Kalmar FF to join SS Lazio for an undisclosed fee. "I'm delighted to get the chance to play for such a huge club," said the 24-year-old. "It has been an honour to represent Kalmar and I will miss everybody at the club."

FC Kuban Krasnodar have brought in 23-year-old Paraguay full-back Melgarejo from SL Benfica for a fee reported to be around €6m. "Melgarejo is pretty young but he has amassed significant international experience," said Kuban sporting director Sergei Doronchenko. "He made it to the UEFA Europa League final with Benfica. I hope he will strengthen our team for the task we have ahead of us this season."

England Under-21 midfielder Nick Powell has left Manchester United FC to join second-tier Wigan Athletic FC on loan for the 2013/14 campaign. Powell, 19, moved to Old Trafford from Crewe Alexandra FC last summer. "We're delighted to welcome Nick to Wigan Athletic, and thank Manchester United for allowing a player whom they have invested a large sum of money in and has incredible talent, to join us for the season," read a Wigan statement. "We're all excited to be offering him the opportunity to play football at a high level and for him to continue his development here at the club."

Vitória SC secured four players on deadline day. The Minho outfit signed 21-year-old midfielder Tiago Rodrigues, who last season helped the team win its first Portuguese Cup. Tiago was then snapped up by FC Porto, but now returns on loan. Also arriving on loan from Porto is Senegal centre-back Abdoulaye Ba. Up front, the Guimaraes club unveiled striker Nii Plange and winger Chris Malonga, who join from Sporting Clube de Portugal and AS Monaco FC respectively.
