Katsouranis stays at AEK

Kostas Katsouranis has signed a three-year contract extension with AEK Athens FC.

Kostas Katsouranis, part of Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™-winning team, has signed a three-year extension of his contract with troubled UEFA Cup contenders AEK Athens FC.

Opting to remain
Several of his squad-mates have asked for transfers due to problems at the indebted club, despite the takeover of former player Themistoklis Nikolaidis. But 25-year old defensive midfield player Katsouranis has followed the example of Milen Petkov and Sotiris Konstantinidis and opted to remain

AEK statement
A club statement read: "Kostas Katsouranis signed a new contract with AEK Athens running for three years. Knowing the financial problems of the club, Katsouranis could have asked for his freedom and demanded the money owed to him. But he chose to stay, although he attracted the interest of many foreign clubs. AEK would like to thank him for his decision and we promise that we will not stand in his way in the event of any offer from abroad that will give him the opportunity to further his career."
