Second-half goals from Jeremain Lens and Miguel Veloso helped FC Dynamo Kyiv qualify for the UEFA Europa League knockout phase with a 2-0 victory against Rio Ave FC on a chilly night in the Ukrainian capital.

Lens broke the deadlock on 53 minutes, terrorising his marker out on the right and curling the ball into the bottom corner with the help of a slight deflection. Artem Kravets, Andriy Yarmolenko, Lens and Younes Belhanda all passed up excellent opportunities to double the lead before Veloso finally killed the game off 12 minutes from time, heading Yarmolenko's cross beyond Ederson.

Surprisingly, it was the eliminated Rio Ave who had started this Group J match in more determined fashion. A superb effort from Ahmed Hassan almost opened the scoring as he dispossessed Danilo Silva before curling a shot towards the bottom corner. Olexandr Shovkovskiy was not to be beaten, though, not on the night he made his 582nd competitive appearance for Dynamo, breaking Oleh Blokhin's club record.

Dynamo were already knocking on the door, though. Kravets, Lens and Yarmolenko all squandered real chances and only a fantastic reflex save from Ederson denied Kravets midway through the first half. Mykyta Burda also came out second best against the keeper before Lens finally broke his resolve.
