Carr on road to Newcastle

Newcastle United FC have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland defender Stephen Carr from English Premiership rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC for an undisclosed fee.

Long association
The 27-year-old right-back, who has signed a four-year contract for the UEFA Cup contenders, had been at Tottenham for 12 years since joining as a trainee in 1992. He captained the club last season and had been expected to play a continued role as the side is rebuilt following the arrival of new manager Jacques Santini.

Disappointing season
However, Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson has been looking to strengthen his defence following the summer purchases of Dutch international striker Patrick Kluivert, and midfield players James Milner and Nicky Butt. Carr, who has 30 international caps, could make his debut at Newcastle's north-east rivals Middlesbrough FC on Saturday.
