Napoli continue to hold sway in Serie A after a round of weekend action that brought a dramatic success for fellow UEFA Europa League contenders Liverpool.

Italian frontrunners Napoli are feeling the heat from resurgent Juventus but maintained their two-point cushion on Sunday after winning at Sampdoria for their fifth consecutive league triumph. There were victories too for compatriots Lazio and Fiorentina, while Liverpool and Tottenham both won in England – the Reds edging Norwich 5-4 – and Manchester United lost at home to Southampton.

In Germany, Dortmund returned from their winter break with a 3-1 success at Mönchengladbach to remain closest to Bayern München, a result that set them apart from Schalke, Augsburg and Bayer Leverkusen. Elsewhere, Villarreal remain fourth in Spain despite a draw, and both Sporting CP and Fenerbahçe enjoyed wins at the top of their respective leagues.
