Brincat in surprise move to Sliema

Birkirkara FC captain Joe Brincat has signed for UEFA Cup rivals Sliema Wanderers FC.

Birkirkara FC captain Joe Brincat has surprised his club by signing for Maltese Premier League rivals Sliema Wanderers FC.

Failure to agree terms
Brincat could not reach an agreement over a new contract with Birkirkara after his existing one expired last month. Brincat led the club to the Maltese Trophy last season and has scored 48 goals for Birkirkara since his arrival in 1997/98. His departure comes as quite a shock to Birkirkara who saw him as the ideal man to lead their title challenge next season.

Admirer
Sliema's manager Robert Arrigo has always been an admirer of the talented 32-year-old Maltese international and Arrigo has made it clear that some of last season's players will be released. The Nigerian international goalkeeper Murphy Akanji, David Camilleri and Richard Buhagiar seem most likely to be on the move.
