Former Italy midfielder Damiano Tommasi has signed a 12-month deal at AS Roma but will earn only a minimum wage as doubts continue over his fitness.
The 31-year-old suffered a serious knee injury in the summer of 2004 and has not played since. His contract expired in June but he will remain at the Stadio Olimpico after agreeing a reduced salary.
Capped 25 times by Italy, Tommasi joined Roma from Hellas-Verona FC in 1997 and has accumulated 235 Serie A appearances for the Giallorossi. He was a key figure when they won the Scudetto in 2001 but will play no part when Roma kick off their UEFA Cup campaign in the first round against Greek side Aris Thessaloniki FC on 15 September.
