AS Monaco FC midfielder Gerard López is likely to miss the rest of the season after rupturing the achilles tendon in his left ankle during Sunday's goalless draw with Paris Saint-Germain FC.
The former FC Barcelona player was carried off on 65 minutes after falling to the floor in pain unchallenged following a short sprint. An initial diagnosis suggested the six-month lay-off and scans on Monday confirmed that surgery is needed. He will naturally miss the rest of Monaco's UEFA Cup group stage campaign.
The unfortunate 28-year-old, who signed for Monaco last summer, had just returned from a sprained right ankle. He is Monaco's second major injury victim in a week after defender Sébastien Squillaci pulled a hamstring during Wednesday's French League Cup tie against Dijon FCO.
