Espanyol pick up Pandiani

RCD Espanyol have signed Uruguay striker Walter Pandiani from Birmingham City FC after the clubs agreed a fee thought to be in the region of €1.5m.

Struggles with Birmingham
The 29-year-old arrived in England on loan last season and quickly won over the Birmingham supporters, before making his move from RC Deportivo La Coruña permanent with a €4.3m summer transfer. However, the South American has struggled to make the same impact this term, starting only seven Premiership games, scoring twice. His return to Spain had been predicted for some time. Espanyol director of football Cristóbal Parralo said: "Negotiations with Birmingham have been difficult but we can feel proud at having closed the deal and we welcome Pandiani, who will strengthen the team."

Success in Spain
Pandiani is expected in Barcelona on Thursday to complete his medical, having penned a two-and-a-half year contract with the Primera División side. The forward is a familiar face to Spanish football fans, having struck 32 league goals in four campaigns with Deportivo and also impressed during a season's loan at RCD Mallorca. He is eligible for the remainder of Espanyol's UEFA Cup challenge, starting with a Round of 32 tie against FC Schalke 04.
