Totti torment as Roma equal record

AS Roma captain Francesco Totti faces a long spell on the sidelines with a broken leg suffered in the record-equalling 1-0 win against Empoli FC on Sunday.

AS Roma captain Francesco Totti faces a long spell on the sidelines after sustaining a broken leg in the 1-0 Serie A win against Empoli FC today.

World Cup worries
The Italian international forward was carried off on a stretcher at the Carlo Castellani stadium after a challenge by Empoli defender Richard Vanigli, and will be out for at least two months. He was taken to hospital where a scan confirmed a leg fracture and ligament damage. The injury might even jeopardise Totti's chances of appearing at the FIFA World Cup in Germany in June.

Record equalled
The news of Totti's serious injury completed a mixed day for Roma, as their narrow victory this afternoon meant equalling the Serie A record of ten consecutive wins, the first team to achieve the feat since Bologna FC in the 1963/64 season. They face Club Brugge KV on 23 February in the return leg of the UEFA Cup Round of 32 after their 2-1 victory in Belgium on Wednesday.
