Former French international midfielder Sabri Lamouchi, 34, has been released from his contract at UEFA Cup contenders Olympique de Marseille.

Former France midfielder Sabri Lamouchi has been released from his contract at Olympique de Marseille.

'Internal competition'
The 34-year-old began the season in the starting XI but recently fell out of favour with coach Albert Emon and asked to be allowed to leave following Sunday's 2-1 win against FC Girondins de Bordeaux. "After the game, he said he was in a very tough situation and wanted us to look in to how to release him from his contract," said club president Pape Diouf. "He could not stand the competition for places."

UEFA Cup
Capped 12 times, Lamouchi was an important member of the Marseille squad which reached last season's French League Cup final and finished fifth in Ligue 1. He also featured as the southern side negotiated the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and played on Thursday as FK Mladá Boleslav were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Cup first-round tie.
