Mexes signs on for Auxerre

Room for improvement
The 20-year-old has signed an improved deal which could keep him at the Ligue 1 club until 2006. Mexes, who has been linked with a move abroad, said that he wanted "to keep improving" before leaving French football.

International class
Capped twice by the senior side, Mexes was a member of the French team beaten by the Czech Republic in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final last summer. He joined Auxerre in 1997 and has since made 90 appearances for the Abbé Deschamps club, scoring four goals. Auxerre face Liverpool FC in a UEFA Cup fourth round first-leg tie on Thursday.
