Tottenham Hotspur FC have signed France Under-21 defender Younes Kaboul from AJ Auxerre for a reported €12m fee.

Cup winner
The 21-year-old played 52 league games, scoring three goals, in three seasons with Auxerre and was a member of their Coupe de France winning side in 2005. He was also an integral part of the national team that won the 2005 UEFA European U-19 Championship.

'Hottest prospect'
Tottenham manager Martin Jol said: "If you ask people in France who is seen as the hottest prospect in defence they will say Younes Kaboul. We are very happy to have him on board. It's important to have quality players in defence and with Younes, we have that." Kaboul is the third big-money transfer at White Hart Lane this summer following the signings of Wales defender Gareth Bale and England striker Darren Bent. Spurs will return to UEFA Cup action in the first round in September following their second consecutive fifth-place finish in the Premier League.
