Belgium defender Nicolas Lombaerts has been rewarded for his form at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with a transfer to FC Zenit St. Petersburg.
The Russian league leaders after 15 rounds of the 2007 season have swooped for the versatile 22-year-old on a four-year contract from KAA Gent. After coming through the ranks at Club Brugge KV, Lombaerts first broke into the Gent first team in the 2004/05 campaign and went on to make a total of 76 league appearances, scoring one goal. As well as his four appearances at the U21 finals last month, Lombaerts has been capped once at senior level and will hope to further his international claims by representing Zenit in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup, provided they come through the second qualifying round.
