UEFA Cup returns to centre stage

Juande Ramos's hopes of an unprecedented third successive UEFA Cup triumph are hanging by a thread as the Round of 16 is played to a finish this week.

In the balance
After leading Sevilla FC to glory in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 competitions, Tottenham Hotspur FC coach Ramos heads for PSV Eindhoven knowing his hopes of an unprecedented treble are in the balance. A goal from Jefferson Farfán saw his side lose 1-0 at White Hart Lane last week, and Tottenham must win in the Netherlands if the Spaniard is to have any chance of making it three in a row.

Upper hand
PSV coach Sef Vergoossen knows that the Premier League side – seeking a third UEFA Cup success – are tricky customers, saying: "We aren't there yet. They have a team who can score from a half-chance, even in an away game. But, let's be honest, if I'd had the choice to take this result before the match, I would have signed immediately, stepped on to the bus and driven home again."

Everton test
Elsewhere this evening, Everton FC will look to overturn a 2-0 deficit against ACF Fiorentina at Goodison Park while Hamburger SV will seek to turn the tables on Bundesliga rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen after losing 1-0 away in last week's first leg. Getafe CF, in their first season in European competition, will look to maintain their advantage over SL Benfica, having won 2-1 in Lisbon.

Lost cause
RSC Anderlecht look to be chasing a lost cause as they trail FC Bayern München 5-0 going into the away leg of their tie, but FC Zenit St. Petersburg are not giving up despite being 3-1 down against Olympique de Marseille. Marseille coach Erik Gerets knew the value of Zenit's away goal, saying: "There is a big difference between 3-0 and 3-1."

Thursday games
The round concludes on Thursday as Rangers FC look to defend a 2-0 lead at Werder Bremen's Weserstadion, while Bolton Wanderers FC visit Sporting Clube de Portugal having drawn 1-1 in the home leg. The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be held in Nyon on 14 March. The final will be staged at the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May.
