Vergoossen dismay at PSV horror show

If Sef Vergoossen was "horrified" by the way his PSV Eindhoven side performed, Cesare Prandelli was left purring at ACF Fiorentina's "magnificent" display.

I was horrified by the way we gave it away. You don't have to be an expert to notice that we immediately surrendered control of the match. It had started with Heurelho Gomes being forced to kick the ball long every time, instead of building from the back. We conceded possession so much that we were unable to build up any pressure. And the way Fiorentina took advantage shows their great quality, capped by a great striker. Although we were desperate to perform well, we made too many wrong decisions and tried to force the equaliser, and when the second goal came it was all over. After that we put pressure on, but it was too late. Obviously it is disappointing, yet we knew beforehand it was going to be tough. Saying that, we felt we had a chance of the semi-finals and when you do not make it, it is a huge blow. But I know this group well enough to be confident they will be ready again come Sunday. It will be more a case of getting them right physically than mentally. We just have to be realistic. It just wasn't going to be our night.

Cesare Prandelli, Fiorentina coach
To perform as we did, in a match of this importance, was magnificent. Our forwards made the difference and we showed a positive attitude throughout, although against a big club like PSV you cannot always take risks. Last week we received criticism after the 1-1 home draw, but now we have turned it around with the right attitude. I said yesterday at the press conference that I was looking forward to the match. I was just very calm and positive about the game after watching the boys in training. I felt it would go for us. We came here to win and we succeeded. To achieve the victory, all our players had to show their quality. Normally I am very good at controlling my emotions but with 2,000 fans travelling from Florence to Eindhoven to support us, I got a bit emotional. Now we just go back to the hotel and will fly back to Florence tomorrow. On Sunday we have to play in Serie A and deliver the goods again. This victory is very important but we just have to take one game at a time.
