The 24-year-old had the operation after picking up a knee injury during his side's 2-2 derby draw with FC Zürich on Sunday. Rehabilitation is expected to last a month, a big loss for Grasshoppers on the day they kick off their UEFA Cup campaign away to KKS Lech Poznań in the second qualifying round. Zárate, who made 24 Swiss Super League appearances last season, will also sit out the second leg in Zurich on 28 August.
