SK Rapid Wien will aim to account for a third former European Champion Clubs' Cup holder in a row when they visit Celtic FC following successes against Hamburger SV and Aston Villa FC. Celtic, meanwhile, are hoping to bounce back following their 2-1 loss at Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC on Matchday 1 in Group C.

Previous meetings
• David Hay's Celtic and Otto Barić's Rapid met in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round, with the Austrian side winning 3-1 at home – current coach Peter Pacult scoring Rapid's opener. Celtic won the return leg 3-0 but the result was annulled after crowd trouble. The game was then replayed at Old Trafford, with Rapid winning 1-0.

• The squads for that meeting in Manchester on 12 December 1984 were:
Celtic: Bonner, McGrain, McLeod, Aitken, McAdam (Colquhoun, 68), Grant, Provan, McStay, McGarvey, Burns, McClair.
Rapid: Feurer, Lainer, Garger, Weinhofer, Weber, Brauneder, Kranjčar, Willfurth (Keller, 88), Gröss (Rotter, 79), Bručić, Pacult.

Match background
• Both Rapid and Celtic never took part in the UEFA Cup group stage.

• Aside from the abandoned game against Rapid, Celtic's two home games against Austrian opponents in Glasgow both ended in victories. Rapid have lost all three of their games in Scotland by a solitary goal, discounting that annulled defeat 25 years ago.

• Celtic have won only one of their last six European home games – a 2-0 victory against Villarreal CF in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage (10/12/08). They have lost both of their European home ties this season without scoring.

Team facts
• Rapid coach Pacult was a prolific scorer for his current club, FC Tirol Innsbruck and TSV 1860 München during a playing career where he also won 24 caps for Austria. He has been Rapid coach since 2006, rejoining the club following spells in charge of 1860, FC Kärnten and 1. FC Dynamo Dresden.

• Pacult's goal against Celtic was his first in European competition.

• Celtic's English coach Tony Mowbray also represented his current club as a player (1991-95) between spells with Middlesbrough FC and Ipswich Town FC. Since hanging up his boots, the former defender has managed Ipswich, Hibernian FC and West Bromwich Albion FC, replacing Gordon Strachan as Hoops boss this summer.

• Rapid's Finnish international Markus Heikkinen has experience of Scottish football, having represented Celtic's Premier League rivals Aberdeen FC from 2003-05, where he earned a reputation as a tough-tackling, diligent defensive player.

• Celtic host Hamburg on Matchday 3, while Rapid visit Hapoel on the same night, 22 October.
